I learned when I asked a few of my friends about the kinds of gifts they love best to give, that these people are more amazing than I even thought, that I have excellent taste in friends, and that I am an impoverished giver…but I have some great teachers.
Leaving room in relationships for the important middle place we need to cross through on the way to answers is not intramural friendship – it’s master’s level. So give yourself space to be a rookie.
Sometimes the things that are carried in with the date make me feel proud, and those things I keep close like an heirloom handkerchief. April is full of them. The way we pat our chests and say, “I’m here,” when someone takes attendance, some April days tap my heart and wait to be received.
